Essential oils are some of the most versatile substances in the world. Among their many uses, one of their most well known purposes is to work as cleaning agents.  In a world where synthetic chemicals are becoming ever present in household cleaners, essential oils offer a natural alternative to traditional chemical cleaners.

Essential oils work as cleaners in a multitude of ways. Most obviously, their wonderful scents help cover and remove nasty household odors.  Many traditional household cleaners will include synthetic essential oils to add a pleasant scent to the cleaner.  Cotton balls with a few drops of distilled essential oils can help cover nasty smells in trash cans, diaper bins, laundry rooms and so many other common problem areas.  Essential oil cleaners are also known for their anti-microbial properties.  Mixing essential oils with vinegar, soap, and detergent are great ways to make simple home cleaners that are strong yet safe. Check out some of the top essential oils used in everyday cleaning.

Lemon is a great antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral cleaning agent. It makes for a great all purpose cleaner around the kitchen and bathroom. Other uses include soap grime remover, furniture polish, laundry scent aid, and oven cleaner.

Like lemon and other citrus oils, orange is a great all purpose cleaner. It works especially well on those sticky messes like gum or tree sap that find their way into a home. It’s an excellent floor cleaner and its antimicrobial properties make it a wonderful counter-top cleaner.

Lavender has long been used as a bug and pest repellent around the home. It also works as a fantastic odor eater, adding a fresh scent to any couch, bed or pillow that it is sprayed on.  Other common uses for lavender include window cleaner and a laundry additive to remove musty washing machine smells.
