Angelica essential oil is often referred to as the “oil of the angels,” largely due to its calming scent. In addition to the mental health benefits provided by its scent, angelica oil has a long history of being used in the treatment of potentially deadly diseases, such as the 16th century European plaque [1]. Angelica’s unique combination of constituents, including d-3 carene and a-pinene, is largely responsible for the numerous benefits this essential oil provides. Here’s a look at a few of the top health benefits provided by these two main ingredients.

D-3 Carene

D-3 Carene is a significant contributor to the antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal properties found in angelica. Studies have found that it is particularly effective at fighting off common bacteria, such as Clostridium difficile and Clostridium perfringens, both of which can wreak havoc on the digestive system, as well as Candida albicans, a fungal infection caused by yeasts [2]. In all studies, only a tiny amount of the oil has been needed to effectively fight infections, particularly in the digestive and respiratory system [3].

Angelica is also frequently included in aromatherapy treatments designed to combat anxiety, agitation, depression, insomnia, and various conditions affecting the nervous system [4]. A-pinene is a primarily component of the mental health benefits it provides, as well as its ability to help reduce pain and control inflammatory reactions, by enhancing the release of cortisol in the body [5]. Made and released by the adrenal glands, cortisol plays a large role in the body’s ability to manage everything from stress to pain.
