Head lice treatments contain many questionable chemicals. A safe alternative can be found using essential oils.  Studies in Iceland showed the effectiveness against head lice when using the essential oils of aniseed, cinnamon leaf, red thyme, tea tree, peppermint, and nutmeg in shampoo and rinse solutions.

Here are some single oils that can help with head lice:

  • Lavender
  • Peppermint
  • Thyme
  • Geranium

Along with these single oils, try these effective blends and applications.

Head lice oil blend:

  • 4 drops eucalyptus radiata
  • 2 drops lavender
  • 2 drops geranium

Topical application:

  • Dilute 50/50, 1 tsp, applied to scalp.  Massage into entire scalp, cover with disposable shower cap and leave for at least 1/2 hour.  Then shampoo and rinse well. Use the rinse below.

Head lice rinse:

  • 2 drops eucalyptus radiata
  • 2 drops lavender
  • 2 drops geranium
  • 1/2 oz. vinegar
  • 8 oz water

Application:

  • Mix into a container with a lid.  Shake vigorously, then pour over hair making sure very strand is rinsed.  This should be done leaning over a bathtub or sink.  This is not recommended if you are still in the bath tub as lice may cling to other body hairs.  Dry naturally.  Repeat until lice and eggs are gone.
